Senior Softball - Spring Newsletter

Kia ora koutou

The Nelson Softball Association extends a warm welcome to all those involved with softball this season. While last year presented us with some challenges we were able to show that we can adapt and respond to keep softball going which is a positive step forward for the game in the region. Then in more recent days, COVID has again challenged us all leading into the 2021/2022 softball season. It is a timely reminder that we need to be flexible and able to adapt to the changing environment.

So what’s been happening? In June a new Nelson Softball Association Board was formed as well as supporting subcommittees in the following areas; Grounds and Facilities, Competition & Participation, Coaches, Officials & Volunteers, High Performance and Media & Events.

This new system has been set up to create a fresh approach which we hope will allow for increased growth and development in key areas as well as developing our leadership and knowledge amongst our members. Our new subcommittees are forever evolving and developing and if you think you would like to join one of these teams then please get in contact with us.

Life Members:

Congratulations to the two newest Life Members Janice Oliver and Derryn French. There will be a special presentation and ceremony on Saturday 2nd October, 3:00pm at the Softball/Hockey Pavilion. All members are invited to attend to help celebrate this special achievement.

Grounds and Facilities:

As you can imagine the preseason grounds preparation has been put on hold while we are in lock down. Once the levels lift we will need some extra hands on board please to get the fences up at the park. Working bees will be posted up on the Nelson Softball page as the levels decrease.

Competition and Participation:

Nelson Softball Association Open Day:

Nelson Softball has an Open Day planned for Saturday 2nd October from 1-4pm. More information will be sent soon. It is hoped that we see lots of players come down to the park on this day for some planned activities as well as the Life Membership ceremony at 3:00pm.

Registrations:

This year Nelson Softball is completing all registrations online through the sporty.co.nz website. Clubs are encouraged to get their members to complete all registrations by the 25th September.

Each Club /Team is to then present a team list with full names. This can be added to as registrations are completed throughout the season. A Nelson Softball Team sheet will be sent out in the coming weeks for Clubs/ Teams to complete.

Coaches, Officials & Volunteers:

Umpires: Unfortunately our umpires workshop has just been postponed, this was due to happen on the 11th September. It is hoped that we can organise a couple of zoom sessions, one as a follow up to the umpires exam and the second around the Fast 45 rules. The umpires exam will go live from the 1st September.

Coaching: Nelson Softball would like to highlight the resources that are available on the Softball New Zealand website. This is the best place to get up to date information; https://www.softball.org.nz/Development/Coaching.html It is also hoped this season that we can coordinate some coach-specific sessions - more information to come on this.

High Performance:

It is with great pleasure also that we welcome Lawrence Allan to Nelson Softball. Lawrence has just returned to NZ, after coaching 10+ years in Europe. In Europe he attended 3 Men's World Championships for Czech Republic National Men's Team, 3 European Championships and was also Head Coach of National Serbian, Austrian, and Slovenian Women's Team, attending various European Championships. Lawrence has also coached the Mens and Women's team in Czech Republic. Before leaving NZ, he won 4 National Titles - 3 U19 Boys and 1 Men's Title. So as you can imagine we feel very lucky to have Lawrence on board this year to grow this area of High performance.

You would have also seen a few weeks back that expressions of interest were called for Coaches and Managers for the 2021/2022 Representative Season. It is with great pleasure that we can announce the following:

Nelson Senior Men’s Coach: Lawrence Allan (Jefferies and NPC, Christchurch)

Nelson Senior Men’s Manager and Scorer: Still to be appointed

Nelson U17 Boys Coach: Darren Aldridge (U17 Nationals, Palmerston North)

Nelson U17 Boys Manager: Tracey Green

Nelson U15 Boys Coach: Don Glenie (Seddon Shield and SI Club Open)

Nelson U15 Boys Managers: Nicky Mason and Aimee Groome

Nelson U15 Girls Coach: Lawrence Allan (Seddon Shield and SI Club Open)

Nelson U15 Girls Manager: Still to be appointed

Where there are areas that we are not able to field full teams to send away, Nelson Softball will endeavour to ensure that players get picked up for tournaments for their respective age grades etc.

Events and Media:

This is an area we are hoping to develop and grow this year also, through the Facebook page and website. If you have some positive softball stories to share we would love to hear from you so we can do a bit of a feature. Otherwise please feel free to message the Team on facebook messenger with your game day results and photos to share.
